    Victoria Dam (Sri Lanka)

The Victoria dam is located in a deeply incised gorge in the valley Dumbara, immediately behind the mouth of the Mahaweli Ganga and Hulu in Teldeniya. It is a double curvature arch dam, 122m (400 ft) measured along the ridge high and 507m (1663 ft) long. Its design is intended to be the most suitable for the geological conditions and the terrain around at the place. The Victoria Dam has created a reservoir of 730 million cubic meters and a capacity of 210 MW. A special feature is the automatically opening the spillway crest gates, when the level of the reservoir rises above full supply. In October 1981, during the construction of the Victoria Dam, visited Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip the project site. The Victoria reservoir was on the 7th April 1984 seized and it started quickly filled with an unusually high rainfall in the central highlands.
